Margaret Murray Washington Margaret Murray Washington was well known for her brilliance and adept educational ability. Her educational philosophy is documented as conservative activism that aimed to uplift Black people through education and hard work. As the director of domestic arts programs, her standpoint was that of self-preservation through accurate history and the idea that Black women should focus on morality, temperance, and parenthood – specifically without agitating white people – to uplift the race. Her activism was rooted in increasing school funding, keeping young people out of prisons, and improving prison conditions for those who continued to serve time.
