Charlotte Forten Grimke embodied the characteristics of a conscious social justice advocate. Raised in an abolitionist tradition, Charlotte Forten traveled to Salem, Massachusetts to attain a college education. She faced tremendous obstacles but used her writing talent to express her thoughts and feelings, with the goal of seeing the end of slavery… In adulthood, Charlotte continued to build on this legacy by traveling to South Carolina to help former slaves learn to read and write, some coming as far as miles away to learn from her.
